In the early hours of a Washington, D.C. morning, a heartbreaking scene unfolded. A 9-month-old Pit Bull mix was found clinging to life in a gutter on Okie Street NE.

Critically malnourished, severely dehydrated, and battling mange, Shepherd had been lying there for nearly 12 hours. His organs were beginning to shut down.

Rescuers from the Humane Rescue Alliance rushed him to a nearby hospital. The outlook was grim he was collapsing frequently and his condition was dire.

Yet, despite the odds, Shepherd made it through the first critical week of care. Slowly but surely, he began to show signs of life again.

Now, Shepherd is healing in a loving foster home in Burke, Virginia, under the care of Kim O’Keefe. She’s both heartbroken by his past and inspired by his will to survive.

“It’s unthinkable that someone could leave a dog like this to suffer,” she said. “But he’s full of love and trust, even after all he’s been through.”

Though he’s not quite ready for adoption, Shepherd is gaining strength daily. His progress has been nothing short of remarkable.

Meanwhile, the Humane Rescue Alliance is working with authorities to find the person who left Shepherd to die just steps from a shelter that could have saved him sooner.

Shepherd’s story is one of cruelty overcome by kindness, and of a puppy who refused to give up. With every day, he’s moving closer to the life he always deserved a life filled with care, comfort, and love.
