This was the heartbreaking daily reality for a dog in Mexico City, who was routinely left chained outside his home—no matter the conditions. Come pouring rain, blistering heat, or chilling winds, he remained tied up with no protection, no comfort, and no one to show him kindness. Isolated and ignored, he endured the elements in silence, his only companions being the passing days and the hope—however faint—that someone might one day see his pain and intervene.
A heartbreaking video showed the dog curled up tightly, trying to shield himself during a violent storm with heavy rain and hail. His owners appeared indifferent to his suffering.
The emotional footage, captured by a vigilant and compassionate neighbor, was later posted on Twitter in a desperate attempt to draw public attention to the dog’s heartbreaking situation. The short clip revealed the animal’s frail body and sorrowful eyes, silently pleading for help. The neighbor hoped that by sharing the video on social media, it would not only raise awareness but also inspire others to take action—and ultimately bring the suffering dog the rescue and care it so urgently needed.
The neighbor, posting under the username @JC_real__, wrote, “Once again I want to inform my neighbors that regardless of the weather or the storm, they leave Leo outdoors. Animal welfare agency, please help him, mayor Gustavo A. Madero.”
The video quickly gained attention, prompting Letty Varela, an official from the animal control brigade in Mexico City, to respond. In a Twitter update, Varela confirmed that the brigade had successfully rescued the dog, named Leo.
“Comrades from the animal control brigade of the Secretariat for the security of citizens in Mexico City talked to us and convinced us. The dog was previously rescued from the terrible conditions in which he was and is currently being followed and cared for by our doctors. Enough with animal cruelty,” she stated.
Varela later shared an uplifting update showing Leo’s remarkable transformation. “Together we change tales. What a pride it was to rescue this dog yesterday and today to make him calm, loving, and happy. Thanks to all my colleagues from the animal control brigade for their dedication and work,” she said.
Thanks to the neighbor’s quick action and the animal control brigade’s efforts, Leo now has a second chance at a happy and healthy life, free from neglect and cruelty.
