For eight long years, a dog named Pamela lived in a rundown shelter in her family’s backyard. Her already difficult situation took a turn for the worse when her future became uncertain.
Janine Guido, the founder of Speranza Animal Rescue located in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, shared a heartfelt image of Pamela on Facebook.
The photo showed Pamela peering out from her tiny shelter, and Guido commented, “Have you ever seen a dog with a broken heart?” This doghouse had been Pamela’s entire world for the better part of a decade.
Guido was alerted by a local real estate agent that Pamela might soon be without a home, prompting her to take action.
As the homeowner faced eviction, Pamela was gently placed into Guido’s car. “He shut the door and went back to collect his belongings,” Guido recounted.
Pamela was understandably frightened by these abrupt changes. She retreated into her carrier, tucking her tail under her, and letting out a low growl.
“She might not bear any physical scars, but the emotional ones are apparent,” Guido shared. “Those are often the hardest to heal.”
Janine Guido, who has extensive experience rehabilitating even severely affected animals, knew that with enough love, patience, and care, Pamela could heal from her traumatic past.
Apart from emotional healing, Pamela required medical attention due to lesions caused by living outdoors on rough ground.
“She shivers with fear whenever I talk to her,” Guido noted. “Her entire body trembles… It breaks my heart.”
However, over the next few days, Pamela began to trust Guido, even going so far as to give her a kiss. Having lived her entire life outdoors, Pamela was starting to understand that these recent changes were in her favor.
Initially wary, Pamela soon showed affection. After several comforting walks with Guido, Pamela’s outlook shifted.
During one morning walk, Guido wrote, “Pamela stayed close by my side, often looking back at me every few steps, jumping up to wrap her legs around my waist, and showering me with kisses when I knelt down.
It was as if she was saying, ‘I’m OK now.’ Moments like these are priceless.”
Despite Pamela’s remarkable progress, Guido is committed to giving her the necessary time to adjust completely to her new life. It’s crucial for Pamela to feel secure and at ease before any big steps are taken.
“We will have her thoroughly examined and allow her to stay with us until we fully understand her personality,” Guido explained. “We’re hopeful that she’ll be ready to join a family soon.”
