In late November, a dog named Nina arrived at the Wright Way Rescue in North Memphis under distressing circumstances.

She had been confiscated from a cruelty case and brought to the shelter with a significant 13-pound tumor attached to her abdomen, alongside two smaller tumors on her left mammary chain.

Nina’s condition was dire; she was underweight, running a fever, and suffering from a severe skin infection affecting her hindquarters and tail.

Preparing her for surgery was a tense process, as the risk of the largest tumor rupturing escalated with each passing day.

Despite the urgency, the veterinary team prioritized conducting thorough tests and pre-surgical preparations. Ensuring Nina was healthy enough to withstand the anesthesia was essential, so efforts were made to improve her weight and overall health.

These steps were crucial because the surgery posed a risk of significant blood loss and carried a higher-than-average chance of fatality. Fortunately, their meticulous care paid off.

On December 8th, Nina underwent her critical surgery, emerging successfully. As she recovered, she was placed with one of Wright Way Rescue’s exceptional medical foster families, where she thrived in a supportive environment.

Post-surgery, the results from her tumor biopsies revealed that the smaller tumors were benign. The larger one, however, was identified as a soft tissue sarcoma.

Despite this, all signs now indicate that Nina is on track for a complete and healthy recovery, with the hope of soon finding a permanent, loving home.

For now, Nina is surrounded by care and affection, and is making great strides toward a bright future.
